This was sent to TIMalert subscribers at midnight because nobody works harder than me:

TIM trading account—now stands at $73,733, lost $800 on my latest OPXA short, now I’m flat for the month, very disappointing but some stocks just don’t work, very undisciplined trading on my part, for that I apologize, still up 73% in 2009 and up 494% in the last 22 months

Longer Term Account $53,757, lost $4,000ish on my well-researched but ill-timed GVBP short…very painful, very educational….account is up 8% since May 1st, 2009 inception…this account can be auto-traded by subscribing

FortuNet, Inc. (FNET) along with PokerTek, Inc. (PTEK) along with GameTech International (GMTC) spiked today, all in the video poker gaming sector, but why did FNET spike 100% and the other 2 only 20% each? Who knows, no news, message boards are all rumors…tiny marketcaps on all 3, FNET is a potential short.

Genova Biotherapeutics, Inc. (GVBP) I wrote that special post for TIMalert subscribers only!

Zoom Technologies, Inc. (ZOOM) daded nicely all day…guess that first up day pattern really was like OPXa…good lesson to learn how the current market treats earnings winners…maybe this means the overall market is extended…no play on this just good for observation.

Opexa Therapeutics Inc. (OPXA) is for TIMalert subscribers only!

CEL-SCI Corporation (CVM) spiked 50% and is now up 100% in 2 days over the 75 cent/share on rumors of swine flu vaccine for the government….90% sure these guys are just plain lying, reminds me of TAYD dropping hints they were dealing with Asian governments back after the tsunami of 2004…other people doubt too, stock is already 50 cents/share off its $1.80ish highs, potential short still

Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (LXRX) had positive drug news and spiked 130% near the market open, but then faded all day to finish up 60%…I like shorting these stocks, but only on the 2nd or 3rd up day, after some initial short sellers get squeezed

Energy XXI (Bermuda) Ltd. (EXXI) keeps breaking out, up another 18% to $1.90…don’t short this, debt exchange is positively lasting news, potential buy, but chart is uggggly

eDiets.com Inc. (DIET) has surged from $1 to $2.5 in 2 days on financing news…most likely whoever got the shares is doing something to pump up the stock…obvious potential short

Frederick’s of Hollywood Group Inc. (FOH) and Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (PIR) are both real company, but both are breaking out in the mid $2s on a multi-day and multi-week basis…the bad news is both have lots of bitter longterm shareholders at higher prices and both have come up from the 10 cent/share range in the past few months, meaning they’re already up 20x…potential buys on both, but know the risks.

The available research on day trading suggests that most active traders lose money. Fees and overtrading are major contributors to these losses.

A 2000 study called “Trading is Hazardous to Your Wealth: The Common Stock Investment Performance of Individual Investors” evaluated 66,465 U.S. households that held stocks from 1991 to 1996. The households that traded most averaged an 11.4% annual return during a period where the overall market gained 17.9%. These lower returns were attributed to overconfidence.

A 2014 paper (revised 2019) titled “Learning Fast or Slow?” analyzed the complete transaction history of the Taiwan Stock Exchange between 1992 and 2006. It looked at the ongoing performance of day traders in this sample, and found that 97% of day traders can expect to lose money from trading, and more than 90% of all day trading volume can be traced to investors who predictably lose money. Additionally, it tied the behavior of gamblers and drivers who get more speeding tickets to overtrading, and cited studies showing that legalized gambling has an inverse effect on trading volume.

A 2019 research study (revised 2020) called “Day Trading for a Living?” observed 19,646 Brazilian futures contract traders who started day trading from 2013 to 2015, and recorded two years of their trading activity. The study authors found that 97% of traders with more than 300 days actively trading lost money, and only 1.1% earned more than the Brazilian minimum wage ($16 USD per day). They hypothesized that the greater returns shown in previous studies did not differentiate between frequent day traders and those who traded rarely, and that more frequent trading activity decreases the chance of profitability.

These studies show the wide variance of the available data on day trading profitability. One thing that seems clear from the research is that most day traders lose money .
