TIMradio #3: Tom Sosnoff, Founder of Online Broker Thinkorswim

Tags: Podcasts, Real Wall Streeters, TIMradio

As I sit here waiting for the near-inevitable crack in VRML’s stock price, I thought I’d offer up a podcast for your listening and learning pleasure: You’ve all heard me talk about how much I love and recommend Thinkorswim as a broker–not only do they have the best customer service/software, but they have solid borrows through Penson and most importantly, the people at the company actually try to help customers instead of ripping them off. Maybe that’s why there’s a Chicago-based firm, not NYC.

So for TIMradio podcast #3, I was fortunate to have a fine little chat with the man behind the curtain, Thinkorswim’s founder himself, Tom Sosnoff. Besides being a legendary options trader and frequent industry speaker, he’s one hell of a laidback / good guy…one of the few out there…so I hope I can still be like him when I’m that rich! Somehow I think all that power and money will go to my head…we’ll see.

PS You’ll hear me say this is the first TIMradio, well, it turned out to be #3, but it’s still #1 in my heart :)

TIMradio #2: Cameron Fous, TheTechnicaltrader.net, Another Successful Microcap Trader Whaaaaat

Tags: Podcasts, TIMradio

All right, stop, collaborate and listen, TIMradio is back with a brand new edition…everybody give a warm round of page views to Cameron Fous of TheTechnicalTrader.net who not only plays microcap stocks from the opposite side as me–meaning he buys them on the way up–he’s in Idaho or some weird place like that, he’s younger and a better trader than me (except the last 2 weeks, haha suck on that Fous!)–with his account up 450%+ in 2 years.

TIMRadio #1: Eddy Elfenbein, Mr. CrossingWallStreet.com

Tags: Podcasts, Real Wall Streeters, TIMradio

Financial blogging has only been around for ages a few years, but already the cream has risen to the top. In my first TIMRadio podcast, I was fortunate enough to be joined by a prime example of that cream, Mr. Eddy Elfenbein, better known by his still-getting-better-by-the-day blog CrossingWallStreet.com. Have a listen and hear us talk about everything from edge-lacking market predictions and Eddy’s old microcap newsletter to my inability to be very outgoing or self-promotional

Techcrunch might be right about Inspectd.com being fun and addicting, but it sets a very very very very very very very bad example. The problem lay in the fact that pattern recognition is only part of the game, you also have to understand the variables that align to CREATE those patterns. Comparing a 100% one-week stock price jump based on a positive earnings report—meaningful, further strength likely—is very very very very very very very different from the same kind of jump based on two ANALyst upgrades and a newsletter mention—hype, reversal probable. Exemplified by the pic below:

What exactly do I teach, well, nothing short of how to profit by predicting 5-20% moves in stocks that fit my model. Microcrap and smallcrap stocks that is. With COIN tanking 8% today, VLNC surging 8% and my last 4 trades—KBX, GENC, FEED and COINW—all acting predictably, even if I only profited slightly (perfect trading is a myth, but it’s really NOT hard for you to do better than me). I have plenty of excuses for my personal failings—not comfortable, intraday meetings, etc.—none of which matter to you as this data proves my thinking and teaching is correct:

3/20 Shorted COIN $8.78, Covered $8.78 (meeting), 2 hours later $8       9% move

3/19 Bought VLNC $4.12, Sold $4.11 (uncomfortable), 1 day later $4.45       8% move

3/18 Shorted KBX $1.79, Covered $1.71 (uncomfortable), 1 day later $1.50       16% move

3/17 Bought GENC $15.19, Sold $15.35 (uncomfortable), 1 day later $17.50-$18       15% move

3/12 Bought FEED $12.40, Sold $12.50 (uncomfortable), 1 day later $13       5% move

3/7 Shorted COINW $12.35, Covered $11.34 (uncomfortable), 1 day later $6.50       49% move

A Solid Trade Executed During A Live Radio Interview

TIM $16,140, Up $134

I didn’t expect any trades today, but when COIN appeared in Barrons recommended by some “guru”, PennyStocking was on (crap company + fluff news + predictable chart pattern = my kind of play)!

If you’ve read this blog over the past few weeks, you know this stock and I don’t get along at all—I’ve had nothing but losses (which I cut quickly) trying to pick its ultimate top. I think it’s a horrible company, but the pumpers are deep and knowledgeable and when they managed to break the stock above a multi-week base between $9 and $12, no matter the hardcore research and anticipation of a double-top at $14, smart were the traders who switched off their emotions and adopted a long bias.
