I don't understand....if he is making money, why does he have such a crappy setup? I have seen gamers and programmers that have better setups. 3 or 4 22-24" LCDs. We gotta get Phil up with the times. He should check out some of the setups on Lifehacker...

Yeah I like this setup. It kind of reminds me of mine. With this type of setup, you can easily capitalize on the market

What applications is he using?

In particular:

- What app(s) is he running on the iMac?
- What app is on screen on the display next to the iMac?

I use a Mac but the list of brokers and trading applications that support Mac OS X is a lot shorter than on Windows.

You're going to hate on his setup? Another reason this guy probably has more money then you is doesn't splurge all of it on dumb shit even if he has the money to buy it. You build your setup around yourself different people do different things. I use virtual desktop and can flip through 8 screens on one monitor. 24 monitors is just fucking retarded, at a certain point it becomes more stupid then impressive.

Who cares what his setup looks like.. (other than the fact that Tim likes it).. I think the title should be related more to the quintupled SKF calls rather than the setup he has... which.. btw.. looks just dandy to me!

Besides.. he can't spend much more room filling them up with monitors.. he wouldn't have anywhere to put his cash! :P

gotta agree that is a horrible setup for any active trader. even if you only need a couple monitors, you can set them up better than that. and 3 keyboards? and that horrible chair. who cares if you make money if you have chronic back pain, carpal tunnel in your wrists and bad eyesight as a result...............................

He could use a better chair. I used to have 3 monitors. But there was information overload. I had to get rid of 1. I use 1 24" and 1 22". 2 monitors work perfectly for me.

It's funny we are discussing trade environment setups. I just bought a new computer setup, just last weekend. I don't have, nor want to waste, money buying all the "Newest Tech" for trading. I kept it cheap by buying an eMachine Desktop, Two 25" inch widescreen (flat screen) monitors (ebay), and a wireless mouse/keyboard setup.

My setup entails, two flat screens for Forex and Penny Stocks and my Dell notebook for emai, blogging, website, etc. This setup is working out just fine for me.

I have a friend who trades Futures and he's one of these guys with 10 monitors and such. Personally, I think it's all for show. Most of the time, he only runs two or three in a trading session.

I think Phil's setup is perfect. Doesn't look overly complicated and it's what works for him. His setup is way better than what mine was ... a single Dell notebook where I'd trade Forex and Penny. It was pathetic!

LOL, you guys are funny! The chair is an issue?

I'll have you know that's my chair from my college dorm and I've spent good money to have it refurbished over the years. For whatever reason, it's the most comfortable chair I've ever used... My wife has one of those super-fancy chairs - doesn't do anything for me.

Same goes for the monitors I guess, there's 2 more off screen but they are arranged in a way that makes me happy. The left montior is running EtradePro, the next one it ThinkorSwim and the right ones (are running Esignal). Of course there's tabs on the windows on my main 3 monitors, which are all on the same processor so there's about 20 screens accessible to me with the main keyboard and mouse. The other two keyboards are almost never touched as they are just various watch lists I use to click on various positions I'm looking at.

While the posted pictures of mondo set-ups do look cool, it seems too much like a sports book in vegas to me. I'm a fundamental trader, as you can tell from the fact that in front of me is text and the sides are charts. So, for my style, all I really care about is the information I'm finding on my main Mac screen which usually has 3 windows with about 3 tabs each active.

I don't think there is a right or wrong set-up for traders - it's kind of like saying a baseball player has the "wrong" glove and bat, it's a matter of preference and 2 guys can get the same job done with totally different selections yet each would probably be very uncomfortable if they traded.

Probably for me, the difference is how I trade to what you guys (assuming you are penny day traders are used to). I don't look for set-ups. I read the papers, listen to the pundits (there are 2 TVs you can't see in the picture), browse the blogosphere and identify a trend. Last week, prior to the Livestock show, I had been discussing with members the rising swell of negative media hype along with record levels of bearish sentiment that were pushing us headlong into a snap-back, which we played for.

Having established a short-term investing premise, we then identify sectors that would most benefit. Find the stocks or ETFs most down (HOV, FAS) or most up (SKF) for the wrong reasons and bet against them. At that point, we might look at the charts but, as I said on that Friday's broadcast, we didn't care that we shorted SKF at $250 and it flew up to $270, it was just a good opportunity for us to improve our positions (rolling to higher strikes), giving us far more leverage than we had hoped for. As long as the facts didn't change, nothing the market does during a single session is a big issue for us.
