I’m Tired Of Talking About Myself, How Did You Do This Year?

Yup, this is a first, I’m done bragging…for at least one sentence…

I’ll try hard not to mention my 250% year-to-date return and I definitely won’t rub in the fact that not one of the 10,000+ stock mutual funds is even up 1%…awww crap, there I go again!

My year end summary: started some blogging practices that are just in their infancy, got a few hundred devoted followers by making them a few thousand dollars each, dominated Covestor’s performance rankings all year long minus a few days, my DVD students gradually began moving up Covestor’s rankings and now are pretty dominant themselves (many have fallen off not because they’re not banking but because they’re using Interactive Brokers which can’t be tracked by Covestor, which sucks for me but is fine for them), created a ton of useful/helpful instructional DVDs and somehow earned 200%+ on my tiny acocunt despite obstacles galore…

Of course I did a ton wrong by being my undisciplined self (although I got better throughout the year), overtrading, overworking and not being tough enough on my blog so as to scare away the cowards who should never be trading in the first place.

No more, let’s hear how you did in 2008? Successful PennyStockers, unsuccessful ones, value investors–you friggin losers!–trend followers, swing traders, options plays, Fibonacci freaks, you’re all welcome to post your yearly % gains/losses, $ gains/losses, greatest/worst trades/investments, lessons learned…let’s get some good solid constructive comment content (for once), c’mon, I know you guys can do it!

I did ok. I think everyone will agree 08 was a shitty year
  • thanks for sharing, is there no one else?
  • Doris
I'm up over 500% ROI this year. I'm becoming more disciplined in my trading, blogging, learning from my mistakes. It was a challenging year for me as I faced a nasty divorce, learning to be a single parent, and faced numerous personal disasters that really impeded my ability to focus.

I praise God that though 500% was not my goal (it was actually way, way more), it is far better than most people I know, professionals included. My 500% was not on ONE trade. Most of this trading was done in the past quarter, as I spent much of the first 3 quarters on my personal life stuff with sparingly intermittent trading.

The year is not over yet, as I'm trading Mon-Wed, so this 500+% could be higher or lower.
  • Nathan
I was more of a learning year for me.
  • Doris
Oh, most of that 500% was made in futures (emini's) daytrading. Some was made in trading options on BIDU, GOOG, CME, AAPL, and a bunch of other stocks that were above $100 in the first quarter of this year.

Up over 100% on an account that is much bigger than than your account. And this is despite a 110% loss on MXFD that translated into a 34% drawdown on my account back in May.

Some big winners: LSCG short, SIL short, RMDX short, USS short, RBCAA short, LTM short, and some others I forgot. I am proudest of taking SSBX from $2 to $0.07 in bankruptcy, based on fundamental research.

I have also been quoted in the Indianapolis Business Journal twice regarding NROM (that was a big winner last year).
  • reaper, how much u now up off my picks/strategy?
  • AdamN
As of today I end the year with an 82% return or $6200 in profits. Not bad for starting out w/ $7500. Here's hoping to an even better 2009.
  • Reaper
Tim, still only 47k off your strategy. December has been a bad month for me.
  • Reaper
I should add that I trade using about 5 distinct strategies. I am adding a 6th for the new year. I recommend that each trader track performance in different types of trades--long/short, different patterns, or wholly different strategies.
  • I invested 15k on my education this year, hopefully it wasnt a huge loss.
  • unfortunately, I took a big loss when morgan survived, and a big one to start with cc. Lesson learned, shit happens.

I'm not a TIM Alerts subscriber (yet) but using your strategy (learned from watching your DVDs....ya'll need to buy em'!!!) I'm up over 70% YTD (I haven't even shorted a single stock...all momentum plays)....this is awesome because when I started trading this year I knew nothing and I was down about 35%. Then I stumbled upon your site somehow...started reading your blogs...made the decision to get your DVDs...and they basically paid for themselves. Thanks Tim!
  • Saadi
The only thing that I didn't listen to you on was using only 10% of your total assets at a time. Sometimes I invested 50% or some in a single stock (which is really stupid) when I was really confident in the stock. One of my biggest plays was this month on ANV. I got in at 2.25 and out at 5.05!

The last 6 months of the year has been outstanding! My first six months wasn't the best, I started out with 12k, and advanced to about 16k in a span of a month until all my solar plays started to deplete causing me to loose money....I regrouped, and mixed my trading strategy and began to short stocks, I also decreased my holding time if I'd decided to buy. .. I started to trade based on speculation- sell on news, buy on over sold stocks, and Short over bought stocks... My best plays that has transformed my account starting in Sept. were SIL, FRE, FNM, (FED, PMI short) SRZ from .41 all the way to 2.26ish- 20k buy in alone took me over 6 figures.(thanks to thelion)...Since that, I have been buying bio penny stocks- ANSV, NRNG, NVD, GTCB- and selling the same day or next with tight stops in place..and those alone yielded me over 14k worth of profit with in one week... thanks to SRZ and ANSV my gains for the year- over 1000%- trading as a living has been achieved

Ohh and Big thanks to you TIM---finding your blog, has been worth wild.....I've learned ALOT.
  • I did +30% in October, then +15% in November, and December, a paltry +4%.

In November, Roche buying MEMY made my gains.

It has been much work and fun to learn and apply all this knowledge and I have been studying your way alongside those of Buffett and others. That says a lot, as for me, you're up there with the best.

    Keep it up, Tim.

Newbie in stocks, playing Tim's strategy for the last 3 months, my 2k account is at 1300 (30% down), wiped out all of my many small gains and 30% of principal with one trade (HSNI), was super undisciplined -- used almost 300% of my account on this single trade (tripple leverage), was always much more conservative before that, waited way too long before capitulation. Can't complain that Tim didn't warn me 5 zillion times...
  • Jeremy
Up 60% in 45 days, just started, 11% of that is my own trades while the rest is off of Tim Alerts. Thanks!!
  • 45% From trend trading equity options

50% from FX (Not too shabby for my first year in the game)
  • Chris
Was up over 300% trading options before October's fall. Lost my discipline and tried to catch the bottom too early. Rebounded some in December. Should finish up just over 100%. Hopefully can get good enough to do this full time when they finally lay me off....
  • cash
I started pennystocking the last week in September and since then I am up $844 using TIM's alerts.
  • You have moderation :)

I should have said, I have learned a lot this year -- even though the market is down, I feel like I'm learning tools to help me do better going forward.

I just am struggling to believe Tim can get the wonderful returns... but then sure, why not... but I was much happier to learn he's had a down day = human and honest.

    vs. Bernie Madoff

    Thanks!

104% since January 2008 - automated system using stockfetcher as a trading engine. I have been out of the market since late September due to volatility filters in my entry software. My system has 6 exit routines one is percent based, one is time and four are price based. I have a max of 2 open trades at one time.

Looking forward to 2009 - Volatility is dropping so I should get some trades signals very soon.
