Critiquing One Reader’s Email…4 Important Points To Remember

Posted by Timothy Sykes on Thu 18th of Sep, 2008 02:35:19 PM

Just got this email in my inbox and felt the need to respond:

Hiya Tim,

Just a brief message to thank you for your teachings and another testimony to your approach.
I opened my account at TOS nearly a month ago (13/08) after had read your book, studied and (I have to admit only part) of your dvd set,
and went through a lot of books (especially Brian Shannon’s Technical Analysis was an interesting read).

To date and after only about 8 trades I am up more than 20%! Sure I lost too, once!
Exactly when I got cocky and decided not to follow your advise on TIMalerts and even against my own judgement…

I started my account with USD 5K, my target is to double my input hopefully by early October

The only thing now stopping me from making more is the bloody SEC day trading rule.

Anyway thanks for a great job man! If I reach my target in October you can put me up for lifetime support!!

Cheers Tim

I love getting emails like this…not only cuz it’s nice to know my hard work/products are actually helping people but because it allows me to reinforce/reiterate key lessons and concepts. Such as:

1. 8 trades and you’re only up 20%? The average TIMalert has been a 10% profit…shooting for 2-3% profits might feel nice, but your risk/reward sux.

2. Never get cocky in trading no matter how much $ you make.

3. The pattern day trading rule does suck, it took me 9 months to get by it, what a waste!

4. Never set goals in trading…you start to force trades that aren’t there, it’s ugly. Trading as if each trade is my last is the mindset that has worked best for me cuz then I have the patience to wait for ideal setups. You guys know I’m an impatient / greedy Jew, waiting until the very last second / perfect chart pattern where I can’t stand not being in a trade is a daily battle.

    All points well taken Tim.
I'm in fact the author of the above article and can only, red in the face, admit that, especialy if you're new to penny stocking, its so easy to get carried away, screw up and set stupid goals. The good thing is Tim is there to put you straight , in his own style :-) as well as the crowd at TimAlerts. Looking forward to see that Chatroom in action.

hey tim..do u consider shorting any of the crappy gold stocks that are spiking just because gold is going higher?
    eg. GBN, lihr
  • Timmmay, what exactly is the pattern day trading rule? Yes, I've searched many of your previous entries and tried to google it, but only coming up with BS and hits about yesterday's crap on naked shorting. Can ya help me out? Also, does your mother still come by the apartment to clean? Just watched episode 5 WSW season 1, you didn't "win" those cuffs from Dave & Buster's either... Liar!

Hey Tim, any thoughts on NCT?!
  • YngvaiMalmsteve
Hey, Tim, it's possible that this guy wasn't using all of his capital on his 8 trades. If he was only using a portion of it per trade, then I could see why his overall account isn't up higher.

20% on an entire account in less than a month is still pretty good....better than the vast majority of people out there.

And yes, the PDT sucks....big time. I feel like I have my hands chained behind my back when trading.

Yngvai, I was indeed only between 10 and 20% of capital each time.I didt look at this way. Today I'm up close to 37% . Once I am more confident with my Entry and Exit points I might use bigger portions. But on average my TIM alerts did return lower profits as Tim.

For anyone who was confused about my last post. It was an attempt to be humorous.

Tim brings a great perspective to an otherwise rigged game.

    Keep up the good work.

I'll be serious from now on LOL
