10 Stocks To Consider Short Selling, I’m On Fire So Pay Attention

Posted by timothysykes on Thu 3rd of Jul, 2008 09:19:17 AM

HYGS
Alerted TIMalert subscribers that I shorted this at $2.29 in the morning, hoping for a gradual fade into negativity saying “i think if it takes out 2.28-2.25ish, it can go under $2”, DEAD ON, stock dropped to under $2 too quick for my comfort, I bailed for quick $250ish profit (detailed post coming)….woulda shorted into the afternoon fade (yes, that’s a perfect one), but I had no trades left, definitely reserve shares to short, pray it spikes again as this could really fall to sub-$1.80 if the setup is right, just gotta wait and see the price action

TGC
Also alrted TIMalert peeps to my horrific amateur mistake on this, shorted accidentally at $3.49, brings up VRML mistake of old, after being down 25 cents/share, covered for 5 cents into dip, which turned out to be a major crack below $3.20, missed out on a perfect afternoon fade of 50+ cents/share, damn thing stings like B…good news is TIMalert subscribers banked as alert was sent out at $3.60…(please post $ gains below)…good news is I expect possible further downside so reserve shares just in case pattern looks good

COIN
Another 15% dropper I highlighted as a potential short HERE, missed out totally with all my TGC/HYGS dealings…not enough trades allowed thanks Osama bin SEC, add some more $ to your terrorist tab! uhhhh, tell me some of u guys got in…now it’s probably too late to do much

EVOLUTION SOLAR CORPORATION (EVSO)
The potential next LBAS gradual riser? Probly not, but there does appear to be upside—more like IDEA…but guess the marketcap, it’s funny

LBAS
Speak of the probable fraud devil! It just keeps goin…on and on…..and on and on…til the break of 10

Genta Incorporated (GNTA)
Rising nicely, keep an eye on it, not shorting just yet…$23mil marketcap

Isolagen, Inc. (ILE)
C’mon big spike—yeah right, I’m dreamin’, $20mil piece of crap

Immunomedics, Inc. (IMMU)
C’mon big spike—yeah right, I’m dreamin’, $183mil and just as bathroom-worthy

Qimonda AG (ADR) (QI)
Billion dollar spiker….wish I had more buying power, reserve shares just in case it wants a sequel today

Morgans Hotel Group Co. (MHGC)
Rising due to buyback plan….oh Morgans, you make me laugh, like trying to save a sinking ship with a bucket….or like CNOA’s CEO buying shares at $1….whoops! Reserve shares and hope some idiots actually believe in the company over its horrific chart

  • Bob (VC)
Odd thing this AM. I NEVER get spam on any of my accounts, but I got three different overnights pumping sub-penny Harris Exploration (HXPN)... Anyone else get this?
  • Reaper
    QI up 15% pre-market
  • Hey Tim

Whats your take on Eurogas EUGS???
If volume picks up, it seems like a potential short.
  • Liberal?
For being listed as a liberal on your Facebook, I'm surprised that you hate the SEC as much as you do. Liberals want more government regulation and less power to the people...it seems that you would be all for the SEC and what it does to regulate.
  • Well...lets see if UVSE can break the .03 mark.
  • Oracle of NYC
Well, that was quick. Shorted 2000 shares @ $2.90 yesterday, and covered @ $2.29 today. $1,200 profit on the day, and made another $566 on the same stock yesterday. Thanks Tim! I'm signed up for the alerts via another email by the way.
  • Oracle of NYC
Speaking of TGC by the way, as no one here is psychic!
  • balls...or just plain nuts...
I couldn't cover HYGS yesterday because I was out of day trades. Covered this morning in premarket at 2.00 from 2.20. On 1000 shares thats about $180 something after commissions.
  • QBIK
QBIK down a quick 3% in the morning...I'm surprised this wasn't on Timmy's watchlist.
  • nice Oracle, i tried shorting at 2.80, but was too busy changing my limit for it to get executed....just sent out this TIMalert as my trade was too quick to notify anyone (happens sometimes...that's why u gotta understand the variables so u can do this yourself, not just rely on alerts):

when TGC just tanked at the market open, i tried shorting at 2.80, missing my execution by a hair...pissed but not out, i watched it tank all the way down to 2!!!! (yes morning panics can do that on these highfliers) so instead i looked to buy since i knew this was too quick/big a drop all based on stop losses (down 30% in 5 minutes on little volume??!?!i don't think so!)...bought 2k at 2.15ish, sold em 2min later at 2.40ish.....great dip buy....u see if u understand the variables behind these moves, u can play the long AND short side!

stil a possible afternoon fader on this and HYGS, remember markets close at 1pm today
  • liberals/govt? nice stereotype there, the SEC is required, they just need more funding or a gutcheck by people who dont BS
  • brent
thx on the close time tday tim... forgot about that
  • Anyone short PDO? your ballin if you did
  • brent
got things ta do tday. And didn't want to be concerned about this trade all morning so i closed my SS on COIN; in 6.10 from yesterday early afternoon out 5.53. Sure want to keep this up. only 400 shares. Still 214 profit. Biggest gain for me yet. Thanks guys....
  • Fantom
    AVID in play boys
  • Fantom
crox, byd, stv, and fnm for cool 496 bucks, thanks Tim
  • Fantom
What the hell is going on pdo
  • PDO is garbage...talk about volatility
  • Adam
didnt short tgc over night bc i didnt know if i could cover this am (out of town). tried to catch the spike but missed the 2.60 bc i wanted 2.70. hopefully some of you had this shorted over night
  • so much crap finally dying as was inevitable, i love this kind of market, die longs die, u've had too much fun
  • balls...or just plain nuts...
Anyone gonna try to ride TGC back up?
  • rstock
    Fantom,

    AVID - Nice find!

    This thing is tanking!!
  • brent
And another 16% for 12bucks, on a small bet of 70ish, gain over at BOM for eur/usd to go down...
  • I traded TGC on the way back up, but I think now it consolidates now..
  • Reaper
Gripe. Made 10% on QI on a 22% move. And I was too scared to put much money in the trade. $60 is still enough for gas money to go traveling this weekend.
  • Adam
ben TGc back up was the bounce @ 2.60 odds against it doing that again
  • Liberal?
Haha what?! Liberals/gov't is a sterotype??? The entire reason we have a two party system is because liberal democrats want more government and conservative republicans want less.

Every liberal wants to expand government! That's why people are liberals, they want a central state to control the people with regulation and government intervention.
  • PCola
Bought 1750 shares of IMB at .60 a few minutes ago. Couldn't have timed it much better.
  • brent
there goes COIN falling off yet another cliff.
  • Keith
I think all this tanking in these smallcrap stocks is going to be a signal for a bottoming in the overall market.Need to put some long term retirement money to work.
  • Liberal?
I don't mean to bring up politics and I'll stop after this, but it just surprised me that you would lean left after how much you have profited from the free market.
  • spencer pratt
    QTWW...carefully timmay
  • HTOG is taking off yet again
  • i agree with most liberal principles but i could give a shit about politics...so to stereotype me in what i should believe about the SEC, blehhh just writing this comment annoys me, trading is my government, anybody who interferes with it--like the SEC--is a terrorist
  • balls...or just plain nuts...
The current political system is very black and white. For example, I consider myself conservative on most social issues, but I find Republicans just as much big gov't as Democrats. None of them truly want to lose any control they now enjoy. My only choice is to vote for a third party candidate with no chance at winning...
  • Keith
Hey Gemini here is a penny stock for ya RUNU.
  • be-the-ball
    Tim,

I don't see how going long TGC into the dump this AM was a low risk play? You said it was down on low volume? those were the largest 2 volume bars on the 1 minute chart ever for the stock?

Trade worked for you but I don't see that it was any more than a good guess. No indication it would bounce.
  • Fantom
I'm using scrolling hod's with screen capture. Thanks Mike the 13th.

    short psd
  • pretarch
hey TIM...have you been paying attention to MXC? that thing is dropping by the dollar.
  • BTB, too funny, volume was caused by market orders and stop losses, u could see the 100k sell orders on the ask, chomping away at anything...i actually put in an order to buy with a limit 2.25, just got a better execution than i expected...really gotta understand these stocks better to know when the panic selling is setting in....morning dumps usually do have bounces afternoon ones dont
  • Fantom
leh is surging again, I might get back in

ha,ha, More red liners than anything!
  • Adam
lets not talk politics it'll create a mess of a blog.

    what i learned today:
Don't try to trade when people are talking to you bc you miss your entry points

Don't get greedy w/ entry points bc you'll miss them too. and when you know a bounce is coming, dont wait, get in on it.

worst trade ever, the one that was right in front of me that i didnt do anything about. made 0 lost 0
  • brent
So, a vote for a third party would be a vote against your choice of the lesser of 2 evils. Having said that Pat Paulsen for president.......
  • Keith

I have been watching RUNU...its that Rudy beverage company....they were hyped up by doublingstocks.com and now has tanked. Until that drink takes off...even im not that crazy
  • be-the-ball
    Tim,

not criticizing you. you made money and that is the key.

just seems like a scalp. scalping pennystocks is not what I thought we were here for. In fact you criticize folks for just that on a regular basis.
  • Fantom
SBH up a .19 but a heavy red liner. I'm definitely gonna need a another broker, red lining trades today,

Ha, die scottrade along with our picks!
  • be-the-ball
    Tim,

more importantly, any thoughts on a MHGC short here soon? Volume drying up
  • BTB, normally i do preach against scalps, but when u see all the variables lined up there, its tough to say not to that easy quarter/share, possible 30-40 cents/share...since my profit was limited thats why it was such a small position though
  • be-the-ball
    fair enough, nice trade Tim
  • HGC, i want a monday squeeze if possible, i dont like shorting real companies so i'll risk missing it to wait for the last possible squeeze
  • be-the-ball
ok, i've done work with MHGC in real life. to call them a real company is a bit of a stretch. :-) but I know what you are saying...
  • Rambone
Don't know if it's been discussed.

Market closes at 1 p.m eastern today.

Tomorrow closed of course for the 4th.
  • just made $1500 PDO bounce!
  • Pumacom
Did anyone catch the break above 3.15 on GETG? I got violated by Scottrade on that one... 5 minutes spent on the phone having to place the order!
  • dude75
    HYGS done bouncing?
  • be-the-ball
i made 5 million on PDO bounce investorslive. cool eh
  • sniper6
no, no, no, fuckin no. If I have to work all day the market has to stay open. What will I do if the market closes??!!
  • Keith
Dam gemini look at RUNU. I didnt buy either.
  • Fantom
Holidays, lunches, and weekends are suckers!
  • Get Shorty..... Reloaded
I don't see any support on HYGS until 1.49.

CNEH don't see any support until 4.23, but somehow keeps on bouncing from 4.5o, guess because of the round number.

Anybody considering HYGS at this levels?

Shorted TGC while seeing it drop this morning, could't get execution until 2.30, then almost crapped my pants when it spiked, luckily got out with a small $45 gain at 2.23 (much better than the $ 350 loss I was looking at minutes before)

I was writing this poster and hybr dropped 10 more cents without me.

Yesterday cowardly covered my huge tgc short. No balls bo glory, still $ 14000 up in 4 days.

Gotta get ready for work see you later, if not, happy long weekend. Tomorrow is going to be a long day for me, at work and with the markets closed, hope i can scalp some canadian plays
  • well Keith...I should have listened to you...up over 100%...nice call...this could be the start of a big bounce if confidence lifts for this company.
  • Fantom
AVID still running up on me. Will have to hold till monday

all out of buying power, shyzer!
  • brent
rambone: post #14, got out of COIN, at 5.53, bfore the retrace up.WHEW ! ! ...
  • brent
is that a dead cat bounce on COIN?
  • Pumacom

  • balls...or just plain nuts...

    Thanks.
  • lmsmith
I missed the morning action- had an interview- but damn- should have kept my TGC short over night- I mad nice on my short yesterday on QI afternoon fade, and UCBH--- since I missed the morning, I will be looking for afternoon fades...
  • Rambone
    brent,

nice work. Last two previous times it hit 5.50 it also did a bounce to 6 and eventually came right back down to test 5. I think it will touch 5 by next week. If not for the CNBC pump it would be at 4 by now.

ZYNX chart nice. New 52 week high. No clue how high the potential is.
  • dude75
    lmsmith,
Just remember mkt closes early today
  • Rambone
CPTC another that's begging to break out. Has broken resistance at 1.22 a few days back. Consolidating at these levels before I think it spikes much higher.
  • Rambone
SOLF at 14 cold be good for a $.50 to $1.00 scalp. Bounced off May 1 low of 12.70 which was the 3 month low.
  • lmsmith
any plays out there as we speak? what time does the marke close?
  • dude75
    1 pm
  • mateo hipotecario
Interesting that the 1st thing I saw when I logged on to the IMB message board on Yahoo this morning was a pump on HYGS.
  • lmsmith
Okay- 1 hour to trade, umm, I guess I will be sitting out today
  • donnacap
I have to learn not to jump so quick to short. The way that I look at it. I didn't lose any $.
  • dude75
so far HYGS is playing like MAXY yesterday afternoon. blaaaa
  • dude75
actually just talking about the afternoon. Earlier was interesting
  • Pumacom
lm- you might be able to get a quick .50 on ICO if it bounces back to the day's highs... had a nice reversal today...
  • Rambone
TITN at 25 should also get a nice little bounce off 6 week support.
  • Ryan
    TGC short posted yesterday:
    Post #3. http://www.timothysykes.com/timsykes/2008/07/02...

    Then shorted more afterhour yesterday:
    Filled Sell Short 2000 TGC Limit 2.95 -- -- 16:37:31 07/02/08

    Covered today:
Filled Buy to Cover 1926 TGC Limit 2.30 -- -- 09:34:26 07/03/08 Order No. 4026225199 Tengasco Inc Com
    Filled Buy to Cover 74 TGC Limit 2.30 -- -- 09:34:26 07/03/08

    Net profit: $1280 after commissions.
Total from TGC alone was $1930 in two days!!!
  • Oracle of NYC
Good stuff, Ryan! But what amazes me is Tim. Even when he misses opportunities, like with TGC this morning by failing to get his order executed at $2.80, he creates an opportunity by taking a quick ride up from around $2.15, and that's given his keen understanding of market maneuvers. He's like the Jordan of stocks in my opinion.
  • dude75
    Figures...Now HYGS starts dropping
  • Ryan
Oracle, there is no way for me knowing when the sharp drop like TGC at open today going to stop and bounce. I can not buy in Tim's style. It would be way too risky for me. But Tim made profit, that is great.
  • ryan of course u should aknown TGC could panic drop--it already closed down a bit on the first day, 2nd day droppers are either morning panics or afternoon fades
  • phyo
every stock is down a lot this week royl, fpp, ssn, etc
  • AdamN
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....

This sums up my trading results for today. In one day I had my single worst lost ever immediately followed by my single best gain ever. I kid you not, yesterday I had bought 2,700 shares of GST @ 2.68, which in and of it self doomed me from the start. I did not wait for the stock to breakout as Tim has instructed us to do time and time again. Instead, I entered at the absolute worst point of the day, because the rest was down hill from there.

Idiotically, I stayed in my position long after the stock price had surpassed my mental stop loss of 5%. Instead, I was so determined to make money on the trade, that I held the stock overnight only to finally concede this morning and sell for 2.21 for an astounding $1270 loss, my worst to date. The funny thing is, that I have read Tim's book, watched his DVD and have read this blog day in and day out where it should now be engraved in my mind to minimize losses when the price action does not continue to trend in your favor. I guess sometimes you just need to learn first hand of the consequences for it to finally sink in.

As much of a gut-wrenching blow this was to my confidence as a trader, I was still determined as ever to push forward and not let this one horrible trade take me down. Early this morning, I was alerted of a pre-hit in Mike_13th's chat room for MBRK. The stock was up roughly 5% in pre-market. After taking that huge hit on GST I was weary to jump in on this one, but I felt that if I didn't, it would prove that the last trade had psychologically beaten me, so I (foolishly/bravely) went all in with 3,000 shares of MBRK @ 1.79. Four hours later I recovered $1080 in profit on this single trade alone, my best gain to date!

Take from this experience what you will, criticize me if you want, but you can't be in this game if you aren't willing to take the bad with the good. If I hadn't been as bullish as I was on that MBRK trade, I would have probably spent the rest of this month feeling beaten and scared to trade into any other position. Now, I am more determined than ever to continue to grow my rather tiny acccount and all the while share my experiences (both good and bad) along with the rest here in this gutter of a market niche we trade in.
  • adam, u continue trading like that, u will go bust. sometimes feeling lousy is a good thing--it makes u more conservative/focused on ideal plays...u just wanna be happy all the time, not what trading is
  • Ryan
AdamN, the best thing I learned from Mike_13th and Tim is cut your loss short! For me this is the GREATEST key to stay on the game with hugh profit and small loss. Mike taught me to cut the loss at 3%. And it worked perfectly. I used to lose upto 6-8% hoping for stock to go my way, but I learned, if I stay with 3% loss rule (maximum 4%) and let it go if anything goes against me. Thoug you may not need it, my suggestion, set up a mental stop at loss 3% at the time you buy or short, cut your loss short if it goes against you, QUICKLY. You will have tons of other opportunities to make big profits. Good luck!
  • AdamN
Appreciate the words of advice Ryan. Tim, I full realize that my trades were reckless and that I could have gotten myself a lot deeper in trouble with that last trade. Just wanted to share the experience to learn from the trade. I do not plan to take such large positions relative to my account in the future. Just ironic of how those two trades played out for me.
  • YngvaiMalmsteve
Hey, AdamN, sometimes there's nothing like the pain of a big loss to keep you from making the same mistake again. I've felt that pain more than once, and have paid my "tuition" for it! Heck, I've had trades I profited on and felt that pain if I screwed up my exit badly & robbed myself of significantly more profits.

The 3-4% max loss rule is pretty good. I'm also finding that remembering the reason you got into a trade helps too. For example, if you buy a breakout, and it fails, you should be getting out as soon as it dips below the breakout point. Ideally this shouldn't be more than a 3-4% loss because you shouldn't be buying a breakout much further than 3-4% beyond the breakout point anyway. Beyond that, you're chasing the trade.

In fact, one of the #1 rules I've set for myself now is, "If the reason you got into a trade changes, then get out." For example, the reason you buy a breakout is because the stock surpassed a key price. If it falls back below that price, the reason you got into the trade has now changed, meaning it's time to get out.
  • My first short today on QIMONDA AG ADS(NYSE: QI).

It was great! Good way to start.
  • YngvaiMalmsteve
    ****Haha what?! Liberals/gov

here's a good web-site to find scam stocks. This site keeps track of all the stock newsletters that are mailed to old people for pump and dumps. Most of these newsletters want them to pay a fee to disclose the stock they are pumping, this site will tell you for free. Hope it helps.
