20 Hot Stocks: 12 Potential Buys, 8 Potential Shorts, Be Choosy

Sooo many plays its scary—I traded 3 times yesterday, made a cool $600, all good trades, if too impatient, so I gotta watch out for Osama bin SEC’s misguided freedom-hating ideology, aka the pattern day trading rule, biting me

What’s in play? Well, these 7 oil/gas stocks are on just about everyone’s radar and of course the old gang (FPP, PDO, MXC)…none of which I’m looking to short anytime soon…okay, well maybe SSN (reserve shares), it’s the biggest pile of manure (just look at the chart filled with bitter long-term shareholders!)

I do wish I’d held TGC overnight as I’m getting emails from several TIMalert subscribers who bought in at my alert at prices ranging form $1.69 to $1.72, although it is a commodity play (so you could have the best setup in the world, which you do right now, but if oil is down, stock’s headed lower too), not a fraud pump and dump that are so clearly/overwhelmingly my specialty

and then lesser potential buys:

LOCATION BASED TECHNOLOGIES (LBAS) This spammer could/should be the next MXFD…who has the balls to hold? You with that Scottrade account?

Cubic Energy, Inc. (QBIK) will today be the day it finally breaks out big past $4? Watch it!

Ahhh my precious, the spammer HYHY, on which I’m short overnight—a truly ideal play I’ll look forward to covering into a morning panic…

and even some lesser short plays:

Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. (ABAT) up on heavy message board rumors, none credible…further reversal likely, wish we could more of a spike (reserve shares just in case)

New Oriental Energy & Chemical Corp. (NOEC) nice pile of dung, but already reversed gains—too many bitter shareholders!

South Texas Oil Company (STXX) got mentioned by newsletter with big big price target…reserve shares just in case

BLUE EARTH SOLUTIONS INC (BESN) as I mentioned yesterday, this could be a CNEX…another big up day, reserve shares to short if u can

MORGAN CREEK ENERGY CORP (MCKE) careful kids, it might be a shady little oil play, but its spike from $2 to $16 before, here’s hoping for a repeat!

Cardima, Inc. (CADM) As I mentioned yesterday, tough stock to short…let it do its thing, reserve share just in case

No positions other than HYHY, stalking the rest like a Tiger

  • out of HYHY at 2.28, went for a morning dump down to 2.21, sellers weren't aggressive, could be an afternoon fade, but i dont trust it...my mom even got a mailer this morning! playing it safe...TGC or SSN overnight holds were the way to go, congrats on those who did

    Look at these oils get hammered. I knew they were so overextended. ROYL is getting destroyed. SSN will be in the red by the close too.

    Out of LEI for $.10 loss and GBR for break even. Should be going green not red since earnings are after the close. I'm done with the oil plays for now. Will take my own advice. Watching my NOEC short for now. Some guy in the Lion was arguing with TIM about this stock. It was hilarious. Tim gave him a new one while that guy posted articles 4 months old. Of course NOEC is the next POT when you're at the Lion.

    Oil plays are DEAD for now! Pick anyone you like and short away. They'll be fading all day long and tomorrow.

    China announced they are raising oil and diesel prices. This news made wholesale gasoline prices drop $.09.

    Momentum in oil has come to a stop short term. Tomorrow you could get news that makes it spike again but for now the small oils are going to get crushed.

    took tgc yesterday around 3:57. got out this morning, i'm not short yet because it just broke out. watch for the rounded bottom on all these gas stocks as the day progresses. kinda like to know tim's thoughts on it.

    I got out of both NNVC (long) and SSN (long) this morning for over a $530 profit on my tiny account.

    I've really turned my trading around and I'm being successful. In 9 days, my account has gone from $2823.46 to $3411.61. That's a 21% return. I've got to thank both Tim and Mike13th...the wealth of info they give on this site and in Mike's chatroom has helped me tremendously.

    I'm ready to scalp MGM for a short. If that 40 number gets taken out I can see a quick $.50 drop. Can't really do it on a small account but once you get over 25K and can go 4 X margin intraday this is free money in a very short period of time. You could see a $.50 drop in a few minutes if 40 is breached.

    11:08 China's National Development and Reform Commission's Web site confirms price increases for gasoline and diesel, among others

    The National Development and Reform Commission of China just sent notice of its decision to raise gasoline, diesel and jet fuel price by 1000, 1000 and 1500/RMB per ton, separately, starting Jun 20th. Also, electricity prices will increase 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour beginning on July 1st. The increase does not include consumer retail electricity price and electricity used by agriculture and fertilizer producers. Also, this round of price increases does not include liquid gas and natural gas. The NDRC said they are aware of soaring crude oil prices and the consequentially deepened price gap between that and the price of oil in China. To relieve the pain caused by the price increase to domestic consumers and curb inflation, they will take supporting measures simultaneously, such as to subsidize certain industries including agriculture, fishery, forestry and public transportation. The NDRC also decided to control steam coal prices from now until Dec 31st, 2008. During this period, the coal production companies cannot raise the price higher than the settlement price on June 19th, 2008. (See 9:42, 10:30, 10:32 and 10:44 comments)

    Just a FYI incase you missed at lion...once again, sykes assumptions on HYHY are wrong. They are not a boiler room as he would have you believe. Their product quality may be in question though - that I discovered from my DD - short on that perhaps, but not his baseless boiler argument because the PR's look funny and the unit looks like a science project.

    I received a reply from SD 5 about it (doesn't allow copy/paste here but I posted on lion)...they are installed on 2 buses but the results aren't as expected so far, and they will be testing for a full year as part of a Ministry of Education initiative.


    Anyhow...I just want Timmy to do real DD and not assumptions from a few PRs and pictures - if you call a stock a scam, you better have real evidence to back it up - that is how I approach things, and I'd hope you would too. That's where you lose credibility IMH, and one day, your assumptions may burn lots of people that rely on you too much.

    Thanks Kris. Got lucky on it. I wanted to short it in the morning but was busy with the oil plays so got a break when it rose back up. When it failed to hit yesterdays close and started going back down I decided to jump in. Fell a lot faster than I expected.

    Look at Yahoo die a slow death. 4 billionaires got suckered into that one. We're not the only ones who buy pumps. They are the same as us but they do it with 50 million share buys. lol
    I love how Yahoo played out. Icahn got what was coming to him. The guy is a genius though. He turned 14K poker money made during college into 14 billion. No hating on that track record.
  • kc, i have too many stocks moving to do DD, thats not how i trade. best get that through your head...i'll never be let down by thinking the worst of every company and everyone...i take my losses quickly, but when a company sends out a $4million spam campaign, odds are 99,000 to 1 they are a scam...i hope for your sake, i'm wrong, i could care less now, i'm out, good day kool-aid drinker

    Strategy - short the spammy newsletters at new day low AND lower than previous close and early in the AM. Usually quite safe risk reward. Also an overnight short usually doesn't work until the musical chairs has begun. Typical pattern if you watch them.

    timmy..you still miss the point...you make these assumptions that its a scam just because of a spam campaign or questionable looking PR's...but simple DD, I proved they are not a scam and DO have an arrangement with the school district, with guidance by the government. Whether its successful though is another story....your 99000:1 odds technically got cracked and I'm sure many more you call scams are not. Don't get me wrong, not saying hyhy doesn't have short potential given the campaign and move so far, but you provided mis directed reasoning. Better case in point, you called CSY a scam...I'd love to see concrete reasoning as to why. They did the RM when they had no revenues, so I see no issue with them not going public back then by way of IPO...that is likely one of your weak arguments. The other is that they are in China, so they must be a scam....great insight...NOT...make me a believer Timmy, make me a believer - and base it on something concrete please.
  • simple, every low priced stock is a scam until proven otherwise...f it gets pumped up by spam/messae board posters, its a good opportunity to short cuz these companies ALL have tons of bitter longterm shareholders who love the opportunity to get out on any bounce. then its just a question of applying some simply trading psychology and technical analysis and presto, i have my 50 cents- $2/share in downside that i look for

    Market cap of $325million for a product that is causing worst mpg in testing by the school district. I dont think so.

    exactly michael..and that is an accurate angle that DD could have provided to justify a short...not sykes lazy angle he uses all the time. That's fine...hyhy aside, I'd love to know what he 'discovered' to label CSY a scam when obviously there were no bitter shareholders whatsoever given the very solid long term increase in share price, that STILL lags fair value by 50%. I don't think shareholders could have been bitter with 180% appreciation in a year, even if it is still cheap as hell.

    yes Michael..leaving it long term most likely as the day to day trading is just noise...can't overlook $2.50 to $2.75 eps next year..I held and traded AOB (direct competitor) over a period of 3 or 4 months and gained on most of its run from $5 to $12 last year.
