The Beginnings Of The Best Damn Stock Market Glossary…Ever

Posted by timothysykes on Sat 17th of May, 2008 03:30:48 PM

No matter how much I try to simplify penny stock trading and relate it to the real world, many of you still don’t even understand the basic terminology. So, for you guys, I’ve created TIMterms, a glossary of commonly used concepts and terms. Be warned, unlike the rest of the stuffy narrow-minded finance world, it ain’t boring and you’re damn right it’s opinionated. After all, it’s far better to have the opinion of somebody with a proven track record than the financial journalist wannabes over at Investopedia who often get their facts wrong!

Here are the first 15 TIMterms, eventually there’ll be hundreds, maybe even thousands of them, all inter-connected with plenty of examples Wikipedia-style, and links to alternate definitions and examples (anybody with a blog or website, def. comment on this post as I’ll link to anything worthy) but gimme some time, I’m not rich enough to clone myself to get all my projects done right away…yet. If I’ve done this correctly, you just need to click on the orange folder above each term to be taken to its definition:

1. ANALysts
2. Buying To Cover
3. Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)
4. EBITDA
5. EPS
6. Max Pain
7. PE Ratio
8. Penny Stock
9. PennyStocking
10. Risk-Reward Ratio
11. Short Selling
12. Short Squeeze
13. Unworthy Trade
14. Volatility
15. Worthy Trade

Whatcha think? I need suggestions for more terms, c’mon, don’t be shy!

Nice, good work Tim, always trying to improve something.
My "penny" contribution for another term :) "Naked Short".

By the way, I'm waiting to receive your book I bought last week from amazon.fr (I'm from Portugal) but from their support's response at this moment I'm waiting for a delivery from US (probably you already broke the stocks for your book here in Europe :))
  • KEVIN
How about a trade that was "TIMalicious", which is a trade that set up perfect and was played perfect by no one other then TIMOTHY SYKES!!

    TIMALICIOUS BABY, YEAH!!
  • jj
Nice addition! I think a few visual aids will help to solidify the TIMterms section...remember you were the first to bring hot models to help describe your stock charts...so don't stop there!
  • jj
Other words that could be defined:

    Level II
    SuperNova
    MicroCrap
  • jj
oh ya...you should also add this to the navigations bar on the top right.
  • Tim,

I think it would be helpful for you to define these terms:

    1.) Liquid
2.) Illiquid (the liquid versus illiquid distinction)
    3.) Float
    4.) Average Volume
    5.) Pump and Dump

From having read your site for the past three months, I think you reference these terms and concepts most often.
  • Max
one suggestion: enable comments on the TIMterms
  • thanks for the terms..and yes comments will be opened soon along with content from other blogs/websites that deal with that term..indian designer's day off
  • Oliver
maybe you should call it TIMpedia? ;)
  • I second the notion of calling it TIMpedia, but I think TIMterms is fine too because it is more direct. These ARE the terms of the game, the terminology! Oh yeah, I have an idea for you, Tim: TIMtheories? TIMtheories would be just a paragraph or two of your theories, because I remember you said you're not even that great of a trader but you've got the theories down. I have personally benefited A LOT from reading and conceptualizing many of the theories you speak of, such as your distrust of the financial media CIRCUS, or your lack of care for macroeconomic trends, but I think many of your theories are scattered across your articles. Again, I thank you for your contribution and your work. I visit your site every day, I am dead serious. And guess what, I've made about $680 in one week since shorting with my thinkorswim account.
  • I love you man, in a non-gay and brotherly way.

    Tim -

What was the confirmation on PDO/MXC being supernovas now? It seems before this major runup you were still bullish on these. Does this mean that you think the upside is pretty much over for these stocks?
  • 1. Yeild
    2. ETF
    3. Regulation T
    4. Mutual fund nahhh who really cares about those.
  • avis
this isn't a relevant comment but...

newbie question: how do you keep track of your individual gains and losses for tax reporting purposes? do you have any recommendations?
  • eb
How about instead of TIMpedia, can I suggest TIMIpedia? Kinda like a Wikipedia by Tim for us? What you think Tim? Sounds pretty cool?
  • eb
How about the term..."priced in"? Ive heard that term a million times but I dont know what it is.
  • Evan
    Tim,

I always have business ideas multiplying in my head 24/7. My entrepreneurial spirit always gets the best of me at some point and I have to vent some out or my brain might combust. It would be really cool for you to document this whole year (ie. blogsite, certain comments, charts from these stocks we're currently playing, etc.) You may have already thought of this, but the title could definitely be: Penny Stalking

From your last book, I know you're good with the tagline text, but this one could read: How the Outcast Youngsters of Wall Street Fought Back

ps- I've been forgetting to login before posting the last few days- can I use my Timbucks to short a supernova in order to make up some ground?

  • cash
Tim you have got to get into the merchandising your brand cause you are becoming a brand. You do know this right? My two ideas are a camo penny stalking shirt and a FATHEAD like the athletes have out so you can over look us making our trades.
  • enorck
Tim I actually meant I wasn't going to list all of those (TA patterns), you simply could do multiple blogs based on all of that alone easy. Appreciate you insight and straight-forwardness, and look forward to reading here in the future.

Sorry about the duplicate there too.

MoneyShot has no game when it comes to short selling, in fact the ballsack has yet to drop. Here's how amateurish MoneyShot is on investing in general:

Thursday afternoon MoneyShot's bone worthy wife gets a brochure from Kentucky USA Energy Corp. At first glance, Money was all, "that's junkmail- throw it away." BUTT, since Money just opened up a Scottrade account and started dabbling in some novice elementary Swing Trading he figured he'd inspect the brochure. It looked legit and as of May 17th MoneyShot had no clue there were fraud companies scamming the masses and unsuspecting newbs, UNTIL, he went to their website and started clicking on their news links, like the one titled...

"These 15 Hot Stocks Are Good Short Candidates."

The link took me to the iStockAnalyst site and MoneyShot read every word of Timmay's article. Upon realizing that Money would have been punked by the darkside of the investment world of fraud he decided to Google Timothy Sykes and as a result spent all day Saturday fattin around on the couch watching reruns of WallStreet Warrior season 1 and navigating throughout Club TIM. By the way, MoneyShot was wondering how far Tim got with the hottie from FIU. Timay Too Smooth should bang her like a screen door in a hurricane. Money's 94.3% certain that most everyone else who watched that episode punched their midget. But whatevs...

The irony is that KYUS inadvertantly exposed themselves on their own website with Tim's article as a link, or was that their intent all along? Dunno. Money would like to ask Sir Trade-A-Lot what the indicators are for detecting a fraud company. Also, since CHK, CVA, and CLHB were all stock picks on the KYUS brochure it is assumed that these companies are frauds as well. WTF??? How can they be allowed to sell stock of a bogus company? Timmay, you need a word and definition for companies like these.

Anyfart, sorry about the winded post, but congrats on a well designed interactive site and the nuances of investing. Money will continue to swing trade for the time being and learn the hard way.
  • sick idea is this going to be linked on the nav
  • James
Hey, could you add "scalping" to this list? I've seen it used a lot lately.
  • 'Paid Pumpers' of course must be a TIMterm. Hey Timmaaah get in touch with me a la http://www.CollegeStock.com and I can furnish lots of sorted data for your TIMpedia :)
