10 Hot Stocks And Why It Might Be Fun To Short Sell Them
VM
After missing out on perfect 10%+ afternoon fades both Wednesday and yesterday (dan you publishing business model!), I shorted 1,000 shares at $4.01 into the market close yesterday…while I’d have preferred to short into some kind of bounce—as it might bounce a bit early today—this thing had too many things going for it: first down day, filling the gap perfectly, after a multi-day runup smack into resistance, a strong long-term downtrend, a history of rolling over after spikes, a failing business, upcoming earnings (where they’ll probly fail some more, as is their tendency)…there are buyout rumors so it’s not an ideal play, but I’ve learned to trust chart patterns much more than humans. It’s really gotta crack $4—if it does, stop losses and the chart pattern should bring it down to $3.6-$3.75 eassssy…not as much downside potential as I like here though and given the tough environment lately, I’ll play this one somewhat safe

MESA
Nice gradual intraday and multi-day uptrending, TheLion was all over this and that’s why they’re on TIMfavs (many more websites coming soon…)
JRJC
It’s baaaaaack, this Chinese spiker is trying to do what it does best, kinda tough to do into such a multi-month downtrend, but it actually helps too cuz lots of shorts are getting squeeeeeezed. This is now the 7th big spike where the last 6 proved to be great shorts—no pattern works the same each time, they evolve baby, as shorts are learning
VNDA
Failing biotech got upgraded by some ANALyst, up big pre-market, hopefully it can squeeze shorts a bit and offer some good old-fashioned downside!
LNG
Holy God is this thing is rolling over so perfectly it thinks it’s a puppy…I’m sick to my stomach I missed it—or wait is that the Korean food from last night? Yah probly the food, this was a falling knife, gotta stay disciplined in what I avoid, damnit!
SQNM
Is that a little genome momentum play I see developing? I think it is—too bad it’s also a solid earnings momentum play, not for me
BGS
Another earnings play I’d normally avoid if not for the fact some ANALyst got involved, trying to be a hero and pick a bottom, recommending SUCKERS investors buy into a horrifically steadily downtrending chart
OMPI
Only $1.70 off its lows although I do like the stink this company gives off, so hopefully it’ll stop rising gradually and really spike so I can sink my short selling
claws into it
IMMR
Another long-term hard hit gradual bouncer, too gradual for me, it’s like a real company or something—blehhhhhhh…where my frauds at!?!?!
PGTI
You called master…here I am! No PGTI, you’re not worthy of labeling yourself a fraud, you’re just a debt-riddled manufacturer who recently reported good earnings so you’re not shortable cuz it’s all about whether or not you can get out of debt…sorry, I wish you were more of a fraud, stop trying so hard and give into stock promoters—then you could even change your ticker to SCAM—wouldn’t that be fun!

out of VM at $3.95 and $3.99, pathetic breakdown, guess today could be either a gradual down day or a short squeeze, either way not my thing

wish I would have been watching MESA more closely - spiking above 1.30 like that was obviously impossible to hold for very long

Tim,
I got in and out of VM this morning too- 1500 at 4.03 and out at 3.98. Wasn’t liking the the lack of pretty much every one of your indicators. Thanks for the heads up on it though- I’ll always welcome a profit:)

PWSV was a great trade, I hope someone got shares. I couldn’t but did a “paper trade” for $460 yesterday. If I had waited I’d have $1,280 imaginary dollars to spend.
Speaking of imaginary money, I can’t log in to start accumulating my TIMbucks.

Still holding VM short from 4.01 saw no reason to get out as long as it never got back over 4. Hard to tank super quick when the mrkt is this strong.

CLUB missed what–the expectations of ANALysts? no dont be fooled by the headlines, all that matters is the price reaction to earnings, people who are actually buying and selling, its their expectations that count

Wish I had stayed in VM. I was thinking about staying in but I got too nervous on the bounce and took a loss.
34timsykes
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:51 am
its good to be nervous on a stock like VM, little losses are fine, i thought the stock woulda tanked 30+ cents by now, you just never know…this is why I like playing volatile stocks, obviously the ideal time to play this was between the high and low 4s…now it could drop, but u got merger monday and earnings coming up, not sure its worth the risk

i think u should read my article about not shorting randomly strong penny stocks
38Ray
May 2nd, 2008 at 12:30 pm
that’s a good point. i’m willing to cut my losses, which is fine, but just don’t know if this would slide back down. i’m only putting $2K into this trade which represents 3% of my total portfolio liquidity.
