After a big runup and a scary but small drop off its highs, gold is just above January’s highs and right at the all-important 50-day moving average (moving averages are hugely important to big badass trend traders). Commodities should continue to break out, the dollar should remain weak—solid argument for higher prices, but then again, it’s come sooooo far already.

So, the question is how do you play it? Here’s my safe way to play gold: Permanent Portfolio (PRPFX)

Look at that stunning 7-year chart! It’s the top-rated hybrid fund over pretty much every time frame, which I’ve mentioned I’ve been invested in for a while now. Their asset mix—20% gold, 15% global real estate, 10% Swiss Francs, 5% silver and lots of other little stuff—and chart are so beautiful, I’ve allocated 15% of my net worth to it and within a few months, I’m up a solid 4%. Plenty of exposure to gold, just without all the risk of being so concentrated in it.

Tim, is it still good to buy in ?
  • timsykes
goose--don't rely on me for picks and price targets--i'm not cramer...i have no idea your investment goals, nor do I want to know. i just say what i've been doing
  • be-the-ball
keep in mind you are giving back 1% of that 4% to the fund for their expenses.

not saying it's not worth it, just saying all the facts should be out there.
  • be-the-ball
tim, your last 2 trades aren't showing on your tim spreadsheet. is it disabled until the new site is up?
  • timsykes

good find tough to short $5 million companies though
  • I'll second Tim on Eden. IB has a whopping 100 shares of EDEN available to short.

if i am going to put my money there, the little stuff is important too. for a boring blog post, sure you can focus big picture :-) I think you need more posts like Adam Warner at Daily Options Report. Good content but a hot chick in the photo instead of a chart...lol

Thats a good MF chart with Morning star rating with 5star and appealing uptrend chart for 5 years.. Thats a good one. I been searching for a good stock for my son's 529 or coverdaell plan and may be I would this one as it has limitation of 2k and do rest with TROWEPRICE. Good find Timmy.. Thanks..

I Got 145k parked in CGMFX,been in it for 10 years now.
I add to it every few months with daytrading profits.
Sorry Tim this one blows away PRPFX,but whatever, right?
  • Mike ,
I own CGMFX too. Its a great fund (even though its been crushed since your above post). Heebner is one of the best, if not the best money man on the street. But PRPFX is not intended to do what Heebner does. It's intended to let you sleep at night knowing that whatever might happen, when you wake up the money you have in it will still be there.

The fund took a hit with the crash but its beating the S&P by well over 20 points and Heebner by about 30. I am not giving up on Ken. But my point is that only a fool puts all his eggs in one basket. Even the most aggressive investor should have some conservative assets. PRPFX is a great fund to anchor the conservative wing of a portfolio. Its also a good hedge against inflation (which Heebner swears is coming, and I agree with him).
