Some Signs Of Life In Several Small Caps

TIM $15,249, Up $29

Long 200 APWR @ $18.46 Overnight

Speech at the Trader’s Expo went incredibly well yesterday, some people came from as far away as Maryland just to hear me speak, or so they say. Some company recorded it so I’m sure they’ll be offering it shortly, Powerpoint presentation and all, not sure if it’ll be overpriced, but probly.

Funny story about using Bill Gates to tout a Penny Stock View definition in a new window, actually kinda interesting

New SEC rules shortening holding period for restricted stock!

See that “Get In My Top Spots” on the right hand side thing, sign-up so I can continue this honesty quest and never have to be tempted to sellout

Stupid Media Fight: CNBC vs. Barrons over Cramer

Nature Vision (NRVN), a POS little $4 mil company with average daily volume under 10,000 doubled today, no shares available to short, action reminds me of Grand Toys (GRIN) the other day, which I missed filming with CBS. Unlike GRIN though I couldn’t find any NRVN to short today, not that I wanted to really, waaaay too scary, but the odds of success get much better if it becomes a 2-3 day runner, squeezing the early shorts

Bought 200 shares of best of crap breed company breaking out A-Power Enenrgy (APWR) at $18.46, on the afternoon intraday, 5-day, 10-day and nearly an all-time breakout (on little spike over $19 is all that stands in the way). This is what I mean when in my DVD I say to buy stocks enjoying breakouts over multiple timeframes. Yes it’s a lready spiked twice and failed—I got out for a quick $1 the first time, didn’t play the 2nd, but this is the first spike to occur into the close and thus it’s the most likely to continue the next day. Similar to me buying COIN the other day on a multiple timeframe breakout, which was screwed up by negative overnight news. So far, no negative news on this one, so a morning spike, most definitely a pre-market one, looks to be in the cards. After that, I doubt I’ll hold, too many big block sellers and too light volume for me to trust it. Only way I’ll stay in for more than an hour or two is if the volume impresses me.

IDM Pharmacueiticals (IDMI) continued to annoy short sellers. I was wise enough to cover my short before Friday afternoon and the ever so common Monday morning spike, but I shorted 1,500 shares today at $3.23, held for what seemed like forever, but was only a few hours and covered at $3.20 when it looked like it’d never break $3.15. Made like $25. It did eventually break, but then it spiked, broke again, spiked once more—what an annoying play! I’ll only short it if it breaks $3, that’d be a multi-day breakdown, hopefully it cane spike again and fade into that tomorrow afternoon or else it’ll just hold up like some strange biotechs like QSC seem to do and then we’re talking days, weeks or months before a good solid breakdown. Bleh!

TITN excellent morning gap on IBD news, then fade

CTIB midday spike on Walmart rumors, bailing out the people who bought in anticipation of a Crain’s article

Afterhours Spacehab (SPAB) failed to get their NASA contract, that means no financing, stock down 40%, company screwed. Coulda woulda shoulda held my short from last week, betting this company would fail. When in doubt, always bet on these microcraps failing—there’s a reason why I’m so cynical!

Got a big dinner, I’ll add charts to this post later to make it all clearer.

guys stop emailing me about how long i’ll hold APWR, i don’t know, read the post more carefully. 7 eamils about this one question is just too much

I’ll make a prediction. Tim is going to sell if it can’t take out 19.28 it’s all time high, 19.46 for a dollar profit if volume isn’t strong, and sells around 20.50 no matter what.

Who gives a rats ass how long he holds it. The man is a trader, he doesn’t know until price and volume start moving. That is what a trader does - remains flexible. You should too. Dont’ follow his every move, gain insight from his technique. Once you understand his technique, you may trade it a bunch of different ways based on what you see. Tim - I don’t know how you do it. I would be poking my eyes out so that I didn’t need to read those posts. Yeah, I know…I can be an insensitive ass, but c’mon guys!

better yet Alvari, gain insight from what he says to do, not what he does. man is a terrible trader but he can spot a pattern like nobody’s business.

    Tim,

What exactly is the pattern you’re looking for in order to short sell a stock ? None of your posts make that clear…

    Thanks

    February 20th, 2008 at 8:54 am

Alvari- For such an insensitive person… that was very well put (ha ha). Anyway, you’re right about remaining flexible. In fact I got out of APWR yesterday. Made .35c. ready for today….
Tony- My prediction: I’m expecting our best of crap breed to fail on its thrid breakout attempt. And ready to short it hoping to pick up $1. I don’t know what level though. thank you for the tip on $19.28. I’ll be watching that.
    Advice/critisism is most welcome guys.

Today the market will open in gap down. SPY (S&P ETF) is under $134.
So I take the chance APWR won’t do its second spike this morning. I short it at $18.40 in pre-market (yet only 100 shares filled).

APWr might not break out, but it’s def. not a short here–guys gotta learn just cuz something isn’t a buy, doesn’t make it a sell. there’s an entire realm of “avoid because its too iffy either way” that really applies to most stocks. APWR, you have $1 of downside potential and $2-3 of upside–not good risk-reward right now for shorts

  11. 11timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 9:27 am

ivan you just gotta read more, i’ve talked about severa patterns to short. if u want charts, click the charts tab at the bottom of the page, basically stocks up 100-300% in a few days, fading volume, fading stock price intraday, liek to short on 2-4th day of the runup, especially if the news is fluff. my DVD goes into more detail

Premarket APWR is $0.17 down, haven’t you sold yours yet, Tim? Market is looking all red today, why do you expect APWR is going up? $100 oil didn’t help solar, how it could help wind power?

  13. 13timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 9:32 am

out of APWR at 18.22, lost a quarter, boo o hoo, not risking anything with oil down, the market down, solars getting killed.

IDMI is painful, gotta learn to not get so faked out when i cant day trade

  14. 14tsa

    February 20th, 2008 at 9:36 am

Cover my position on APWR with a little profit of 25c a share.

  15. 15timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 9:38 am

who cares about wind power, i buy charts, not ideas. if the company sold power generated from human waste, i’d buy it just the same. playing the setups

    February 20th, 2008 at 9:51 am

Shorted NRVN around $3.94, buy back successfully at $3.60, good for those who pays few fees per transaction. It was already this pattern yesterday, a spread of 30 cents and the same range during a good part of the day.

    Tim,

So for example YTEC - one of the stocks you featured in your post from yesterday just crossed under 17.00. Is that a short opportunity ?

    Thnx

    Ivan

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:21 am

Shorting NYNY here. Entry $2.24, 1/2 position

  21. 21timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:26 am

ivan, ytec is a potential breakout play, not a short. its not up 300% in a few days on fluff, it has earnings, yes its probly a double top but risk reward isnt good.

  22. 22Al

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:27 am

    Covered 300 CEGE @2.95

  23. 23timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:42 am

nice cege trade, my 1,000 share short at $3.35 missed by 3 cents, buuuut wasn’t a perfect chart so i wasn’t aggressive. IDMI acting perfect for shorts and APWR perfect for longs, this is why i teach not just trade!

  24. 24lmsmith

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:49 am

APWR was a good play, if I was able to buy in the a.m when it was down- now is up… is it too late to go long on this one…….

  25. 25Al

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:49 am

    Tim,

thanks - 300 shares wasn’t much of a risk, but I’m still learning and I’m not playing with much money. I do enjoy trading.

  26. 26be-the-ball

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:51 am

APWR failed breakout again. one of these days it will succeed

  27. 27timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:53 am

i don’t like the way APWR trades, a stock this thin shouldnt have this many big sellers at every corner

  28. 28ETQT

    February 20th, 2008 at 10:58 am

    don’t recommend long on APWR?

    February 20th, 2008 at 11:02 am

Did anyone check out the APWR Roth Capital presentation yesterday? They have impressive growth numbers for 08 and 09.

    February 20th, 2008 at 12:05 pm

so… OXFD, Tim u said this was good yesterday, I agreed and bought a good amount of shares at 2.19.. I was glad to see it go up to 2.30 then 2.40 then 2.50.. but then it suffered its greatest intraday loss since its been going up about 4 days ago.. and now its just stuck at 2.25 what does something like this signify? I at least hoped for steady growth for another few days….

Took APWR from 18.25 to 19.00. Good run, but left money on the table by trying to call a top. It looks like its trying to break through the 19.30 but keeps getting batted down, I may re-enter if it finally gets through.

I know solar got crushed this a.m ohh well went long- have a feeling they will gap up tomorrow- I missed the boat on APWR

  37. 37timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Short IDMI at $2.71, looking for $2.40 tomorrow. Obviouly wish I still had my 1,500 from the other day at $3.23, but hindsight is easy

  38. 38Tony Ellis

    February 20th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    Are you watching COIN?

  39. 39timsykes

    February 20th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

yup see COIN but my focus is short IDMI, i’m done buying breakouts unless they’re new highs, i’m just better at short selling

  40. 40Alvari40

    February 20th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Shorting CEC here at 26.77, 1/2 position.
